"people" limits are what a user hits in the app; "api" limits apply only to bots and integrations. Source type "primary" was read on the vendor's own page; "secondary" is independent agreement without a machine-readable vendor page; "disputed" means sources conflict. ### Discord Discord caps free attachments at 20 MB per file. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. - Free: 20 MB [applies to: people] [source: secondary, checked 2026-09-17] https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/25444343291031-File-Attachments-FAQ note: Raised from 10 MB in September 2026. - Nitro Basic: 50 MB [applies to: people] [source: primary, checked 2026-09-17] https://discord.com/nitro note: Listed as "50MB uploads" on the Nitro pricing page. - Nitro: 500 MB [applies to: people] [source: disputed, checked 2026-09-17] https://discord.com/nitro Commonly published: Discord lets free users upload 25 MB. Actually: The free cap has been 20 MB since September 2026. It was 10 MB before that. Why: 25 MB was correct until September 2024, when Discord cut the free cap to 10 MB. It was raised to 20 MB in September 2026. Most tools and guides were written against the 25 MB figure and never updated, so a file compressed to "Discord size" by an outdated tool can still be rejected. 2026-09-08: Free tier raised from 10 MB to 20 MB. 2024-09-01: Free tier cut from 25 MB to 10 MB. ### Email (Gmail) Gmail publishes a 25 MB attachment limit, but that applies to the encoded message. Base64 encoding inflates a file by about a third, so the largest file that reliably sends is closer to 18 MB. - Gmail, personal account: 25 MB [applies to: people] [source: primary, checked 2026-09-17] https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6584 note: Published cap. Applies to the encoded message, not the file you attach. - Gmail, practical file ceiling: 18 MB [applies to: people] [source: secondary, checked 2026-09-17] https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6584 Commonly published: A 24 MB video will send through Gmail because the limit is 25 MB. Actually: It will usually bounce. Plan for about 18 MB of actual file. Why: Attachments are transmitted as Base64 text, which is roughly 33% larger than the binary file, plus MIME headers. The published limit is measured after that expansion. This is also why the same file can succeed to one recipient and fail to another: delivery is governed by the smallest limit anywhere in the chain, and Outlook's desktop client applies 20 MB. ### Telegram The Telegram app accepts very large files. The 50 MB figure that circulates online is the Bot API limit and does not apply to messages you send yourself. - Bot API — send: 50 MB [applies to: api] [source: primary, checked 2026-09-17] https://core.telegram.org/bots/api note: Quoted: "Bots can currently send files of any type of up to 50 MB in size." - Bot API — download: 20 MB [applies to: api] [source: primary, checked 2026-09-17] https://core.telegram.org/bots/api note: Quoted: "bots can download files of up to 20MB in size." - Consumer app: not confirmed [applies to: people] [source: disputed, checked 2026-09-17] https://telegram.org/faq Commonly published: Telegram limits you to 50 MB. Actually: That is the Bot API limit. The app itself accepts far larger files. Why: core.telegram.org documents limits for bots, and it is the most machine-readable Telegram source, so it gets quoted as though it described the app. If you are sending a video from Telegram on your phone, none of the Bot API numbers apply to you. ### WhatsApp The 16 MB figure quoted by most compression tools is the WhatsApp Business API video limit, not the consumer app limit. We have not yet confirmed the consumer number from a primary source. - Business API — video: 16 MB [applies to: api] [source: secondary, checked 2026-09-17] https://developers.facebook.com/docs/whatsapp/cloud-api/reference/media - Consumer app — media: not confirmed [applies to: people] [source: disputed, checked 2026-09-17] https://faq.whatsapp.com/ - Consumer app — document: not confirmed [applies to: people] [source: disputed, checked 2026-09-17] https://faq.whatsapp.com/ note: Widely reported as 2 GB since May 2022. Sending as a document avoids media re-compression. Commonly published: WhatsApp limits videos to 16 MB. Actually: That number comes from the Business API. The consumer app allows considerably more, and sending as a document rather than as media raises the ceiling much further. Why: The Business API documentation is public and easy to cite; WhatsApp's consumer help centre is not. Tools copied the API number, and each other, until it became the accepted answer. Compressing to 16 MB throws away quality you did not need to lose. ## Pages - https://privaconv.com/limits/: full limits reference with sources and history - https://privaconv.com/verify/: how to confirm no upload occurs, in DevTools - https://privaconv.com/how-it-works/: what runs where, technically - https://privaconv.com/changelog/: when each limit changed - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-for-discord/: compress video for Discord - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-for-email/: compress video for Email (Gmail) - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-for-telegram/: compress video for Telegram - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-for-whatsapp/: compress video for WhatsApp - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-8mb/: compress video to 8 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-10mb/: compress video to 10 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-16mb/: compress video to 16 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-18mb/: compress video to 18 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-20mb/: compress video to 20 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-25mb/: compress video to 25 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-50mb/: compress video to 50 MB - https://privaconv.com/compress-video-to-100mb/: compress video to 100 MB - https://privaconv.com/convert/heic-to-jpg/: convert HEIC/HEIF photos to JPG - https://privaconv.com/remove-exif-data/: strip EXIF metadata from images - https://privaconv.com/remove-gps-from-photos/: strip location data from images
